When you open these files, the first thing you should do is to select the armature in pose mode and reset rotations before you start using them. (Alt + R in Blender)

  Because sometimes the textures aren't included in the new reference files! ;)

  Don't you mean CTRL + A and then R, to APPLY ROTATIONS, rather than ALT + R (which is CLEAR ROTATION, and for me just makes the avatar lay flat)?
