Agustine If we had en enviromental shader/reflection it would look better, but creators can model water styles with sound...problem is very few creators do it, its challenging...I did do a waterfall with sound...lowpoly..

Ehl I agree . Augustine we should have something from the devs team. Maybe if they could recruit motivated people to work on that would be something interesting and it might increase the traffic in SL for sure . It s about pretty stuff also if people stay.

Probably we don't all have the same expectation/hopes about what water should look like ;-) Without some variable displacement a flat water shader will look .... flat. specially within VR.
Good water is super hard to make do so probably LL is best equipped to tweak a shader.
Sailing is near to impossible at the time in SL due to sim crossing crashes so good water here and the option to make good vehicles would sure be nice!!
P.S. a good water shader might make you seasick but that how it should be :P

Bluebell It is possible, just not easy. The default water shader is not bad at all, you just have to take the time to experiment. Animating the water (bones) is possible. The hard thing is to adjust the water to the landscape. What is fitting for one experience may not be for another. Same goes for the shader settings and the (UV) animation speed. Last 3 are adjustable for the customer.
There is some nice water already in the store. FullSpectrum has great sea water in the store. I myself, have been working on animated lake water that fits the landscape of one of my experiences.Not finished yet, but I will post a GIF to give you an idea.

DNArt The reason why i strongly believe this is a job for the Lindens only is that,
People probably want water all the way up to the horizon (over 4K meter) and an underwater effect for once you dive in, also an option to keep the water out of your boat and a water drops lens effect when you get out. Shore effects etc etc this all asks in my opinion for a specialized set of shaders that are not here yet. Its a real specialized thing water (and that is why we don't have it yet ).
Its great people put in so much effort to try to fill our great natural need for water but there is a limit to the tools we currently have to our proposal.
VR is cutting edge technology and it feels like we need 5 more years before this place sees more people. So lets build for tomorrow and not the past.
The Lab waited so long with water that i really hope it looks 2025'ish I just wish it arrives before that date.
