I think animated materials can be improved, if we had a checkbox for each map that decides if texture will be using animation, or not. Example:
Animated flipbook diffuse, resulting resolution will be quite small if you have a lot of frames in the flipbook (because each frame will only take up a portion of whole map).
But normal, roughness and metallic maps stay the same, don't change in time - and so it's beneficial to have them NOT in a flipbook, but taking up whole map area, making for crisp details and increased visual fidelity.
Below are two simulated examples. First has all materials in flipbook format, second only has Diffuse in flipbook pieces, but normal and roughness maps are full-res. The difference is clearly seen in the right part of the object.
