How to make an object collision?

I am trying to make an object that has walls that can be walked around, not through, do I have to check something somewhere to make the walls solid or do I have to duplicate the mesh and make the duplicate collision or how exactly does that work. For instance, if you want a house with several walls leading to other rooms how would you make it so the walls are not walk through? If collision mesh is necessary is there a way to do it invisibly? Should the collision version be higher than needed so the avatar doesn't smack into the top of the door? Why can't we just u/l a static version where you can walk around inside by not through the walls? Or ... can we? *Confused* ...
