Vector * Scalar multiplies the magnitude of the vector. What would the converse do? Give a scalar of the scalar value times the vector's magnitude?
I had to look it up because I thought it wasn't commutative, but you're right.
It's vector multiplication (cross product) that is not commutative. In that case you typically end up with a vector that is at right angles to the two original vectors, but pointing in the opposite direction.
